We Worry About the Wrong Things

Pastor’s Column 8th Sunday Ordinary Time February 26, 2017 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, And all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; Tomorrow will take care of itself.” Matthew 6:34 Mark Twain once said, “I’ve suffered a great many catastrophes in my life, and most of them never happened.” How true this is for many of us. I love this quote! Most of us have lots of worries and concerns, often very valid ones. But Our Lord’s point in this Sunday’s beautiful reading from Matthew 6:24-34 is that most of us tend to worry about the wrong things. One of my favorite saint quotes, one which I had on my dresser for many years, is from th

The Lord’s Help For Us, Often Unseen

Pastor’s Column 7th Sunday Ordinary Time February 20, 2011 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God. from 1 Cor3:16-23 (2nd reading at Mass) The world is not as it appears to be on the surface. We as Christians know this to be true: God exists; the angels exist; our loved ones continue to live, but not where we are. We should be intensely interested whenever Jesus reveals secrets about the world to come, since we will all shortly find ourselves living there! And one of the most startling facts of all tha

You are the Light of the World

Pastor’s Column 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 5, 2017 This August there will be a total eclipse of the sun coming right over our church. People travel all over the world to see this and all we will have to do is to just go outside (assuming there are no clouds!). Day will turn to night for about 2 to 3 minutes and we will see the corona of the sun. Notice how the darkness will then disappear as soon as the sun begins to peek through the shadow of the moon. I can't wait to see this! The world without the gospel is a world in darkness. It doesn't know the truth of how things really are. What is that truth? First of all, that we are created beings. This world has a maker -- a person -- w
